Introduction
Today, 8th of October, 2023 both India and Australia started their World Cup 2023 campaign. Here, we are briefly telling the story.
India got off to a winning start in the 2023 World Cup, defeating Australia by six wickets in a thrilling match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Australia won the toss and chose to bat first, but they were quickly put on the back foot by the Indian bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah struck in the third over to remove Mitchell Marsh, and India kept the pressure on from there.
Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne looked to rebuild for Australia, but they were both dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja in back-to-back overs. Australia were eventually bowled out for 199 in 47.4 overs. This was not what the Australian Cricket team wanted to start their World Cup campaign.
India’s chase got off to a shaky start, as they lost the wickets of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma early on. However, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul steadied the ship with a 100-run partnership.
Kohli was eventually dismissed for 89, but Rahul went on to score a match-winning 104. India reached the target with 2.2 overs to spare, winning by six wickets.

Kohli and Rahul were the stars of the show for India, with their 100-run partnership putting the team in a commanding position. Kohli played some exquisite shots, while Rahul was more solid in his approach.
The duo also played well together, rotating the strike and punishing any bad balls from the Australian bowlers. Kohli’s dismissal was a blow to India, but Rahul held his nerve to finish the game off.
Ashwin, Kuldeep and Jadeja Shine with the Ball
The trio of Ashwin, Kuldeep, and Jadeja were excellent for India with the ball, picking up six wickets together in their first outing in World Cup 2023. Ashwin used his variations and guile to trouble the Australian batsmen, while Jadeja was accurate and consistent.
Bumrah also bowled well, picking up two wickets early on. The Indian bowlers worked well together as a unit, and they never allowed the Australians to get away from them.
Australia Needs to Improve to stay in the race in the World Cup
Australia will need to improve if they want to challenge for the World Cup title. Their batting was disappointing in the opening match, and they will need to find a way to score more runs.
Their bowlers also struggled to contain the Indian batsmen, and they will need to be more accurate and disciplined in the next game.
Overall, it was a good start to the World Cup for India. They played well in all three departments, and they will be confident of going deep into the tournament. Australia, on the other hand, will need to improve if they want to stay in the race for the title.
